MENA Newswire News Desk: UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged world leaders to embrace global cooperation during the opening of the 2024 UN General Assembly high-level meeting on Tuesday, warning that geopolitical divisions and unchecked crises are pushing the world toward dangerous instability.

In his annual report on the state of the world, Guterres highlighted a cascade of global threats including conflicts, climate change, poverty, and artificial intelligence, calling it an “era of epic transformation.” “Our world is in a whirlwind,” Guterres said. “We are witnessing unprecedented challenges that demand global solutions.”

Guterres cautioned that deepening divisions between nations, rising temperatures, and ongoing conflicts are creating a volatile environment. He emphasized that the world is teetering on the brink of an “unimaginable” crisis, with nuclear posturing and advanced weapons developments casting a dark shadow over global security.

“We are inching closer to a powder keg that could engulf the world,” the Secretary-General warned. He added that the global community must act swiftly and collectively to confront these challenges, stressing that unilateral actions by governments will only exacerbate the situation.

The UN chief called for urgent collaboration, highlighting two key messages: “First, the current trajectory is unsustainable – we cannot continue on this path. Second, the crises we face are solvable, but only if we ensure that international problem-solving mechanisms work effectively.” As world leaders gathered in New York, Guterres underscored that the solutions lie in multilateral cooperation, particularly on issues like climate change and poverty eradication, urging them to set aside differences and focus on a shared global future.
